Matariki Celebration Day

Corner Stone Sculptures.
Last year all the Richmond School children were invited to create sculpture designs that best identified what they thought Richmond School was about.
As part of this stage we all went on a  sculpture safari trip, to look at different sculptures around Christchurch. We visited Wainoni School, New Brighton Beach Sculpture Park and Hagley Park to study the many different types of sculptures.
Then we came back to school and designed and made our own sculptures out of soap, clay and paper mache.
The common factors from these designs were combined to create four sculptures. These artistic ideas and impressions were then taken to a local concrete caster who helped us fine tune our creativity.
Finally, the concrete was cast and the sculptures were brought to life and at the end of Term 2 we unveiled our four sculptures which represented our four corner stone values.
The sculptures depict Turangawaewae (belonging), Whanaungatanga (Family), Manakitanga (Respect) and Matauranga (Learning). These values underpin our Te Rito values of being Responsible, Independent, Thoughtful and Onto It Learners. These sculpture now join our Te RITO mosaics that were also designed and made by the children.
A special thanks to our sponsors Friends and Family especially John Evans, North Avon Pharmacy, Richmond Working Mens Club and Pikos Whole Foods.
Our thanks goes to Matua Pete Mason for officiating the unveiling procedures.
Lastly, we were very proud of our three representatives Caitlyn, Losa and Nikau who spoke for us. Pai rawa atu you three.
When you are next at school take some time to visit our scupltures and mosaics.
We have further plans for this area over the next two terms so watch this space.
